Dillard Academy Garden Choir’s songs about gardening, healthy foods, and community

Probably the best thing about yesterday’s NC Grown conference was a special performance by the Dillard Academy Charter School’s Garden Choir, which was comprised of about 15 elementary school girls who sang about eating and growing healthy foods and building community while doing it. Dillard Academy is located in Goldsboro and incorporates a 3-acre farm into the school curriculum year-round. Kids have the opportunity to learn about science, grow and sell their produce, promote their work, and be mentored by community members. The Garden Choir is just one example of the great work that they do, and shows that in order to change our attitude about food, we need to educate both children and adults in as many ways as possible, including music.

The video below is not the best quality, but it’ll give you a little taste of the Garden Choir’s awesome performance for yesterday’s conference. They girls are singing about how “corn, squash, tomatoes taste so good!” More photos and videos will be posted once we get them, but enjoy this for now!
